Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry
« on: March 04, 2010, 09:07:37 AM »
I just picked this book up a few days ago. I think it would be a good one to discuss. Has anyone read it? Anyone want to discuss it after they are done reading it?

This is what it says on the back: "I began to know my story then. Like everybody's, it was going to be the story of living in the absence of the dead. What is the thread that holds it all together? Grief, I thought for a while. And grief if there sure enough, just about all the way through. From the time I was a girl I have never been far from it. But grief is not a force and has no power to hold. You can only bear it. Love is what carries you, for it is always there, even in the dark, or most in the dark, but shining out at times like gold stitches in a piece of embroidery."

Wendell Berry has also written "Jayber Crow" for those of you who don't know. That was what I had been looking for, but came across this instead.

Hannah Coulter is one of the later stories about Port William Township...which is the setting of Jaber Crow....

I did find that out. I'm so bummed that I could not find that one. Is it bad that I am reading them out of order?

No, I think it's great that you're discovering anything by Berry!  I have this one, but have never read it.  Maybe it's time...

I think it's time. It is a beautiful story of love. Really beautiful. It's blowing me away.

I also picked up Bel Canto by Anne Patchett, and will start it when i'm done with this one. :-)

hmm.....maybe I will add this to my list. I'm almost done reading "So Long Insecurity" from Beth Moore and I may pick up the books that you guys are recommending!

I've done a couple of Beth Moore bible studies with the women at my church. We are currently doing an Esther study. It's so so good. It blows me away every week!

right now my women's group is doing the Beth Moore study, Believing God, about faith.  It is really good.
Mindy, how is So Long Insecurity? I haven't heard about that.

I was in a group at church doing Living Beyond Yourself: Living in the Fruit of the Spirit by Beth Moore until we started Lent and started the Churchwide series Prodigal God by Timothy Keller. We only have to sessions left in the Beth study and I'm not sure what we are doing after that.

The So Long Insecurity book is about 360 pages. It took me about a week and a half to read. It was really good.

Hannah Coulter is one of my favorite books about the Port William township, so I'm up for discussing it on here. :-)

Awesome! I finished it, and loved it. It was so beautiful. I'll come back soon and write up what my favorite parts were.

I just realized I never did write up my thoughts on this little book. Well, I loved it. The thing that drew me to it was the beautiful description on the back of the book. "Grief is not a force and has no power to hold. You can only bear it. Love is what carries you, for it is always there, even in the dark, or most in the dark, but shining out at times like gold stitches in a piece of embroidery." Those words are beautiful. They grabbed a hold of my heart while I was in the aisle in the library and haven't left it. Many times while I was reading this story Everything Sad Is Coming Untrue came to mind. I wish I had written my thought right after I finished the book, because I'm having a really difficult time remembering what my absolute favorite parts from it were.

Sorry that my thoughts were so lame. Breann, maybe if you write your thoughts about it, I can give some better feedback.

First of all, your thoughts are NOT lame, Kaitlyn. I can see how ESICU came to mind when you were reading the book. Here's a quote from the book about Spring,

"The world that so often had disappointed us and made us sorrowful sometimes made us happy by surprise. You think winter will never end, and then, when you don't expect it, when you have almost forgotten it, warmth comes and a different light. Under the bare trees the wildflowers bloom so thick you can't walk without stepping on them. The pastures turn green and the leaves come."

I'll try to look back over the book and write down my thoughts sometime this weekend.
