Summer 08 News

From Jason:

Hello friends!

I hope you’re enjoying your summer so far! It’s been the best kind of weather where I live in MN – sunshine but cool everyday. The carnival came to our little town in MN and this was the first year I was home to enjoy it. After a couple of days of eating carnival food and riding the Gravitron with Taya and the boys, I’m swearing off cheese curds and corn-dogs for the rest of the year. But now onto more important summer news…

FREE MUSIC FROM DOWNHERE!
As you may know, I’ve spent the last three touring seasons with the group Downhere and they’ve become one of the Gray family's favorite bands, not to mention close friends. I wanted to let you know about a special opportunity for me to introduce you to their well crafted brand of pop/rock music that is deceptively intelligent and literate. They also have two of the best vocalists in CCM (one who sounds remarkably like Queen’s Freddie Mercury and the other who is reminiscent of Peter Gabriel.)

Downhere is giving away their latest record “Wide Eyed & Mystified” as a FREE download for the month of June! This is Downhere at the top of their game with catchy, melodic, and smart pop/rock tunes – for free! Get the download at www.downhere.com, give it a listen, and hopefully you’ll soon see why the whole Gray family are big fans. Again, they are only offering the album free for the month of June, so don’t miss out (and let others know, too.) And then watch for their brand new album to release in September.

Well enough about Downhere, let’s talk about me now :-)

JASON GRAY NEWS
After wrapping up the Spring tour with Shawn McDonald, I’ve been holed up at home writing songs for a new record that we hope to start recording later this year or early next. So far, I’ve written some of my most personal songs to date. I’ve also been collaborating with friends like Joel Hanson, Sara Groves, Andy Gullahorn, among others. If you’ve read my blogs recently, you know that I’ve been wrestling with a prolonged season of writer’s block, so it’s refreshing to feel the words flowing again and I’m looking forward to making a record for you soon.

In the meantime, we’re also going through live performances we’ve recorded this past year to put together a live recording we hope to make available before the end of summer. It will include some of the stories between songs that so many of you have asked for – I’ll let you know when it’s available!

Looking for good summer reads, music, and conversation? Head over to my message boards to join a conversation with myself and others, and also be sure to check out the Rabbit Room where I’m honored to be a regular contributor on topics such as books, movies, music, culture and the unexpected ways they intersect with faith.

Thanks for being a part of the Jason Gray email community! Watch for news about the Fall Tour – hope to see you out there soon! Until then, be blessed,

Jason Gray

New Christmas CD, Michael Card Tour, and Thanksgiving wishes

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope this email finds you doing well and with much to be thankful for. I’m thankful for a great tour with Downhere this last Spring and Fall, and I'm also grateful for a chance to come home and be with Taya and the boys for a couple weeks. I drove 16 hours today to get home in time for Thanksgiving, and we're holed up in our house with the smells of pies and bread to keep us warm against the coming winter temperatures!

ON TOUR WITH MICHAEL CARD
It's good to be home, but I'm also thankful to be joining Michael Card on his Christmas tour in a couple weeks! Michael Card has long been one of my heroes and his music has been the soundtrack to my life for years. To share the stage with him is a great blessing. The dates are posted in the tour section of my website – come see us when we come through your area!

CHRISTMAS CD Centricity Records has released a new Christmas compilation CD called “Bethlehem Skyline” and it features two songs by yours truly! I recorded my own versions of “Mary Did You Know” and one of my favorite Christmas songs, Pierce Pettis' “Miriam”. I had a two day window of time where I was home and able to get these tracks done before the deadline, and I’m proud of what we did, with “Miriam” being one of my favorite tracks I've ever recorded. (the funny thing is, I had a cold the one day that we had to record, and you can hear it in my voice. I always think it sounds kind of cool, though – like it makes me sound more like Bono or Dave Matthews :-)
Bethlehem Skyline is available at the Centricity store and also at iTunes.

I WANT TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH YOU!
We want to meet you on my message boards at www.jasongraymusic.com! It’s a great place to come and engage in conversation about music, faith, and anything else that YOU want to talk about with me and other friends of Jason Gray. It’s easy, just go to my message board (it’s under the tab “The Scoop” on my home page) and sign up your profile to start in the conversation. Join in current topics or start your own. A new topic I’ll be starting this weekend is: your favorite music and movies of 2008. We hope to hear from you on the boards!

Thanks for reading, and again I wish you a very blessed time of Thanksgiving!

Jason is putting together a live recording of stories and songs this Fall!

It's always been Jason's stories and sharing that have brought his songs to life, and for years fans have been asking for a record that captured this part of what Jason does. Jason has already recorded two performances with great audiences in his home state of MN and looks to capture a few more.

"Each night has a different personality because each audience is different - and these recordings are as much about the audience as they are about my songs. The people draw out different stories or a different emphasis... so I'm hoping to get at least one or two more performances recorded - maybe even one with my band, which would make the record a combination of solo acoustic songs, stories, and some band reinterpretations of some of the songs from the last record."

Jason has recorded two shows so far: he performed for a lively college crowd at North Central University on Sept. 16th, and then a more intimate concert in Owatonna, MN on the 19th.

Hey everybody, my new record, "All The Lovely Losers" releases today! I'd
love to tell you why you should pick it up, but rather than me say anything
about it, I'll let you hear from a couple other people like my good friend
Sara Groves who said, "Jason's music communicates something so deeply human, yet always in light of a divine hope... All The Lovely Losers is an album full of great surprises." I didn't even have to pay her to say that. Sweet kid, my friend Sara.

And ChristianityToday.com said "Jason... is one of Christian music's best kept secrets", but I think secrets are over-rated, and that's why I wanted to let you know that you can get my CDs at your favorite Christian bookstore tomorrow (some retailers are offering it for the super low introductory price of $7.97!).

However, we're extending the pre-order special so that when you order the CD
from my site here, you get a bonus exclusive all acoustic disc.

I hope you love the record at least half as much as I loved making it for you.

World Vision launches the “Wide-Eyed And Mystified” tour that is being headlined by one of Christian music’s veteran rock bands, downhere, that also features Echoing Angels and the exciting newcomer, Jason Gray. The spring tour kicks-off in San Bernardino in March and runs through May 20th, targeting the west coast, southwest, and southeast regions.

“World Vision knows the power of the music ministries of these three talented artists and the organization is pleased to be part of this tour that is sure to impact the lives of every attendee,” says Pamela Muse, Director of Artist Associates for Word Vision. “Each artist brings their own unique style and stage presence to this event that will inspire a message of hope and make the walk of faith more real and accessible.”

“We are so excited to get on the road to begin this tour that was named after our third album on Centricity Records, Wide-Eyed And Mystified,” says downhere. “We view ourselves as ministers to the church and we want to share the journey of faith with our fans, so hopefully our music will be a different voice in their lives. We are so happy to be teamed with our labelmate, Jason Gray, and the great new band, Echoing Angels. To be able to combine the ministry with such a wonderful organization as World Vision, that works tirelessly to help combat poverty and injustice for families and children around the world, is truly a blessing.”

Hailing from Canada, downhere hit the U.S. market in 2001 to high critical acclaim and the support continues with their third release on Centricity Records, Wide-Eyed And Mystified. The album offers a sharp, clean modern rock sound with fresh arrangements and worshipful lyrics, which has generated a Top Ten single with “Better Way” in early 2007 and their current single, “Little Is Much,” is poised to break into the Top Ten shortly. JesusFreakHideout.com exclaims, “If you pass on this one, you're making a big mistake. Not only is this the best yet from downhere, but it's also one of the best records of the year to this point!”

Jason Gray is scheduled to release his debut project on Centricity Records, All The Lovely Losers, on March 6. Already the new CD is being heralded as one of the top releases in 2007 with upcoming reviews from CCM Magazine, ChristianMusicToday.com, Charisma, Christian Single, Aspiring Retail, Christian Retailing, Phantom Tollbooth, and Home Life Magazine, with upcoming features in Devo ‘Zine and Focus on the Family’s national radio show, Weekend Magazine.

“You Alone” is the first single and top ten hit for Echoing Angels from their debut album by the same name on INO Records. Known for strong onstage performances, the band has already appeared at Rock The Universe in Orlando, Fl and at AtlantaFest in their hometown of Atlanta with crowds ranging between 30,000 – 55,000.
